Biography Leen Steen

After a long career in the music industry, I decided in 2012 to delve into Chi Neng Qigong. From loud music to the soft movements of Qigong!

My good friend André de Fretes introduced me to this Chinese meditations in motion and he was my first teacher. André taught a small group of people who largely consisted of his family members. In this group I got my first introduction to the Chi field; an exceptionally strong Chi field! The exercises hit home immidiatly. I got tuned in!

André de Fretes (RIP)

After every lesson I felt so calm and at the same time so energetic and alive. Soon I started practicing at home aided by the level 1 CD by Patricia van Walstijn.

The more I trained, the stronger the effect Chi Neng Qigong had on my health.

I had a congenital heart defect (hole in the septum) for which I had surgery when I was 14. The first 25 years after the operation I had no problems, but then the scar tissue from the operation started to act up and I developed a heart rhythm disorder. In 1999 I saw my doctor who diagnosed a heart rate of 185 beats per minute.

After that I underwent the entire arsenal of medicines and interventions that Western science has to offer: beta blockers (with side effects that were worse than the disease) alternating with digoxin – lethal in high doses – multiple cardioversions (the heart is stopped for a few seconds with an electric shock and then restarted) and ablations (new scars are made in the heart that should break the circulation of electrical impulses caused by the old scars).

André de Fretes; my first Qigong teacher

All these interventions worked for a short time, after which the problem returned just as bad.

Practicing Qigong did not result in a miraculous recovery, but it did allow me to function normally. A few years later I got more and more control over my heart and I managed to get it under control when I had an attack of palpitations. My condition improved by leaps and bounds and I also feel mentally healthier and more spacious.

Healing is a process that never really stops. It starts with acceptance of the situation, which creates peace. Peace here mainly means space to grow.

The exercises of Chi Neng Qigong take you to ever deeper layers in your physical, emotional and mental body.

The Healing process ends in a state of being in which the memory of all your cells lets go of the condition. It cannot be expressed better than this in words.

I have built up a lot of confidence in the exercises and know that despite the fact that I have now progressed further, there is still a world, a universe, waiting to be discovered.

That realization gives me an enormous zest for life!

Chi Neng Qigong not only has a strong effect on the body but also on the mind and emotions. By turning inward, you get to know your mind and body better and better, and you are constantly confronted with surprising insights.

Like almost everyone in the Western world, I did not listen to the signals that the body sends. We are too distracted by the tens of thousands of images and sounds that we are bombarded with from the outside world every day.

People often assume that as a practitioner you first work on a strong body, after which the mind follows at a distance. This is not entirely correct; with Qigong the mind is strengthened at the same time as the body.

How could it be otherwise: body and mind are one!
